FAQs

What is the best time to visit Sikkim?
March to June (Spring-Summer): Ideal for sightseeing, flowers in bloom (especially rhododendrons). October to December (Autumn-Winter): Clear views of Kanchenjunga, cool weather, and festivals. January–February: Snowfall in high-altitude areas like Lachung, Lachen, Tsomgo Lake. July–September (Monsoon): Not recommended due to heavy rains and risk of landslides.
Do tourists need any permit to visit Sikkim?
No permit is needed to visit Gangtok and South Sikkim for Indian nationals. However, Inner Line Permits (ILP) are required for restricted areas: Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir – Permit needed (issued in Gangtok via tour operator); North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar) – Permit required (only through registered travel agents). Foreigners, though, must obtain an ILP (Inner Line Permit) to enter Sikkim (available at borders and major cities). Restricted areas like Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, North Sikkim are not accessible to foreigners (except Phodong and Dzongu with special permission).
How can I reach Sikkim?
By Air: Pakyong Airport (Sikkim) – Limited flights from Delhi, Kolkata. Bagdogra Airport (West Bengal) – Main gateway (~125 km from Gangtok). By Rail: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri, West Bengal is the nearest railhead (~120 km from Gangtok). By Road: Well connected by taxis and shared jeeps from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Bagdogra.
What are the top places to visit in Sikkim?
Gangtok – Capital city, monasteries, MG Road, cable car; Tsomgo Lake & Baba Mandir; Nathula Pass (Indo-China border – Indians only); North Sikkim – Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, Gurudongmar Lake; Pelling – Skywalk, Pemayangtse Monastery, Kanchenjunga views; Ravangla – Buddha Park, peaceful hill retreat; Namchi – Char Dham, Samdruptse statue; Yuksom, Dzongu, Zuluk – Offbeat and eco-tourism spots.
What documents do I need for permits?
For Indian citizens: Photocopy of valid government ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, Driving License); 2 passport-size photos; For Nathula, you must be an Indian citizen above 5 years old. For foreigners: Valid passport and Indian visa; ILP form (can be filled online or at entry points).
Can I self-drive or rent a car in Sikkim?
Self-driving is not recommended due to hilly terrain, narrow roads, and restricted areas. Local taxis, shared jeeps, and tour packages are more reliable. Private vehicles need special permits for North and East Sikkim.
What kind of clothing should I pack?
Summer (Mar–Jun): Light woolens, jackets, sunglasses; Winter (Oct–Feb): Heavy woolens, thermal wear, gloves, warm socks; Snowy/high-altitude areas: Snow boots, windproof jackets, moisturizer, lip balm; Raincoat/poncho if traveling during monsoon.
Is altitude sickness a concern in Sikkim?

Yes. Veg and vegan food is widely available. Popular options: thukpa, momos, dal-bhaat, phagshapa, and Tibetan bread. Jain food may need advance request.
Is there ATM facilities, mobile and internet connectivity?
Yes in Gangtok, Pelling, and most towns. However, North Sikkim, Nathula, and high-altitude areas may have poor or no signal. BSNL and Jio work best. Major towns like Gangtok and Pelling have ATMs. Remote areas like Lachen, Lachung may not have functioning ATMs, so carry sufficient cash. Many hotels accept UPI and cards, but always confirm in advance.
